Ontario passed the Protecting Small Business Act, which temporarily halts or reverses evictions of commercial tenants (occurring on or after June 3, 2020). It also aims to protect commercial tenants from being locked out or having their assets seized during COVID-19.
The legislation applies to businesses that are eligible for federal or provincial rent assistance for evictions from May 1, 2020, until August 31, 2020.
This legislation places a temporary pause on evictions and other landlord remedies until August 31, 2020.
